This is highly unlikely due to the large mass difference between the alpha particle and the electron, but theoretically possible. In this case, the maximum momentum transferred would be the initial momentum of the alpha particle, which is its mass times its Show more…

Physics 247: Relativistic Dynamics 2 1) Considering Compton scattering involving a hydrogen atom with an orbiting electron. a) At what angle for the scattered photon does the electron have the largest kinetic energy? b) If the incoming photon has 0.1240MeV of energy what is the photon energy and the electron energy after the scattering at the angle from part a).
Adi S.
(a) In a Compton scattering event, an incident photon with a wavelength λ0 is scattered by a free electron initially at rest such that the scattered photon propagates in a direction perpendicular to that of the scattered electron, as shown in Figure 5 on page 6. The scattering angle of the scattered photon is θ. (i) Using the concept of momentum conservation, show that the wavelength of the scattered photon is fixed at a constant value of λ' = 2.43 pm, irrespective of θ. (ii) If θ = 30°, determine the momentum pe and the kinetic energy of the scattered electron.
A beam of photons with just barely enough individual photon energy to create electron-positron pairs undergoes Compton scattering from free electrons before any pair production occurs. (a) Can the Compton-scattered photons create electron-positron pairs? (b) Calculate the momentum magnitude of the photons found at a $20.0^{\circ}$ angle from the direction of the original beam.
