Assume that the chemical reaction is reactants $\rightarrow$ products. Determine the rate constant and order from the concentration-time dependence. $$ \begin{array}{cc} \text { Time (s) } & \text { [Reactant] (M) } \\ \hline 0 & 0.0350 \\ 10 & 0.0223 \\ 20 & 0.0142 \\ 50 & 0.0037 \\ 70 & 0.0015 \end{array} $$

the reaction a → b+c proceeds with first order kinetics. a chemist sets up the reaction with 10 g of A. After 80 seconds, 70% of the sample has reacted away. what is the value of the rate constant?

00:01 In this question we've been given some concentration versus time information and we've been asked to look into the rate constant and the order of this reaction.
00:12 And for us to do this, we need to appreciate that if a reaction is zero order, it means that the plot of concentration of the reactant against time should give us a straight line.
00:25 And if it's a first order, then a plot of the lean concentration of the reactant against time should give us a straight line.
00:36 But then if it's a second order, one over the concentration of the reactant should give us a straight line.
00:45 So to answer this question, we just have to blot these information on a graph and determine to which of these graphs is going to give us a straight line.
00:54 Now if we plot a syrup order, if we plot the concentration of the reactant against time, the information that we've been given, we get a curve that looks like something like this, which is not a straight line...
