1) (10 marks) A steel strut S serving as a brace for a car hoist transmits a compressive force P=12ksi to the floor. The strut has a hollow square cross section with wall thickness t = 0.375 inches as shown in the image on the right. The angle between the strut and the horizontal plate B is 40 degrees. A pin through the strut transmits the compressive force from the strut to the two gussets G that are welded to the base plate. Four anchor bolts fasten the base plate to the floor. β’ The diameter of the pin in the image on the right is dpin = 0.75ββ β’ The thickness of the gussets is tG = 0.375ββ β’ The diameter of the anchor bolts is dbolt = 0.5ββ Determine the following stresses: a) The bearing stress between the strut and the pin b) The shear stress in the pin c) The bearing stress between the pin and the gussets d) The bearing stress between the anchor bolts and the base plate e) The shear stress in the anchor bolts. (Disregard any friction between the base plate and the deck.)

Step 1
The area in this case is the contact area between the pin and the strut, which is the circumference of the pin times the thickness of the strut. So, A = Ο*dpin*t = Ο*0.75*0.375 = 0.883 in^2. Show moreβ¦

The d = 12-mm diameter solid rod passes through a D = 20-mm diameter hole in the support plate. When load P is applied to the rod, the rod head rests on the support plate. The support plate has a thickness of b = 13 mm. The rod head has a diameter of a = 29 mm and a thickness of t = 8 mm. If the normal stress produced in the rod by load P is 225 MPa, determine: (a) the bearing stress acting between the support plate and the rod head, (b) the average shear stress produced in the rod head, (c) the punching shear stress produced in the support plate by the rod head. A car is stuck in the mud. A tow truck pulls on the car with the arrangement shown in the figure below. The tow cable is under a tension of 2,060 N and pulls downward and to the left on the pin at its upper end. The light pin is held in equilibrium by forces exerted by the two bars A and B. Each bar is a strut; that is, each is a bar whose weight is small compared to the forces it exerts and which exerts forces only through hinge pins at its ends. Each strut exerts a force directed parallel to its length. Determine the force of tension or compression in each strut. Proceed as follows. Make a guess as to which way (pushing or pulling) each force acts on the top pin. Draw a free-body diagram of the pin. Use the condition for equilibrium of the pin to translate the free-body diagram into equations. From the equations calculate the forces exerted by struts A and B. If you obtain a positive answer, you correctly guessed the direction of the force. A negative answer means the direction should be reversed, but the absolute value correctly gives the magnitude of the force. If a strut pulls on a pin, it is in tension. If it pushes, the strut is in compression. Identify whether each strut is in tension or in compression. (Assume ΞΈ1 = 58Β° and ΞΈ2 = 53Β°.)
