Prof. Trautwein argued that ethical realist theories can be important to consider, even if you believe that moral rules are just invented by people, because: even if no such theory is objectively true, 'choosing' a theory as your moral basis provides a principled ground for ethical judgments rather than inconsistent or impulsive choices. we have an absolute moral obligation to understand other people's points of view, and many people take these theories very seriously. they will be asked about on the cumulative final exam, after classes end. they provide an insight into human evolution. Divine Command Theory claims that: humans have the ability to command God to carry out their wishes, such as through prayer. the rightness of an action depends upon one's doing one's moral duty, as expressed by a categorical imperative. either God commanded what is 'good' randomly or God's command was due to goodness existing independently of God. an action is right because God or gods order it, or wrong because God or gods forbid it.
