13.2 PS Problem 12.4 presented data on ten precincts. The information is reproduced here: Percentage Percentage Democrat Minority Percentage Voter Turnout Precinct 78 62 50 56 85 25 13 33 Take voter turnout as the dependent variable and do the following: 4. Find the multiple regression equations (unstandardized). What turnout would you expect for a precinct in which 0% of the voters were Democrats and 59 were minorities? Compute beta-weights for each independent variable and compare their relative effect on turnout. Which was the more important factor? Compute R. Write a paragraph summarizing your findings. 12.4 PS The following variables were collected for a sample of ten precincts during the last national election. Compute and / for each combination of variables and write a paragraph interpreting the relationship between these variables. Take voter turnout as the dependent variable. 41. In the last presidential election, a national survey company claimed that no more than 50% (i.e., < 50%) of all registered voters voted for the Republican candidate. In a random sample of 400 registered voters, 208 voted for the Republican candidate. a. State the null and the alternative hypotheses. b. Compute the test statistic. c. Compute the p-value, and test the hypotheses using a 5% level of significance. Answers: a. H0: p .5 Ha: p > .5 b. z = .8 c. p-value = .2119 > .05; do not reject H0.

A Pew Research survey asked 2,373 randomly sampled registered voters their political affiliation (Republican, Democrat, or Independent) and whether or not they identify as swing voters. 35% of respondents identified as Independent, 23% identified as swing voters, and 11% identified as both. Are being Independent and being a swing voter disjoint, i.e. mutually exclusive? Draw a Venn or create a table summarizing the variables and their associated probabilities. Which is easier to input? Which is easier to understand? What percent of voters are Independent but not swing voters? How many voters are in this category? What percent of voters are Independent or swing voters? What percent of voters are neither Independent nor swing voters? Is the event that someone is a swing voter independent of the event that someone is a political Independent?
