surfaces with dimensions D = 1.5 in and d = 1 in. The heat-treat process resulted in minimum
tensile strengths of S₁ = 100 kpsi and S, = 70 kpsi. The shaft section at the shoulder is subject to
a completely reversed bending moment of 800 lb in and a steady torsion of 400 lb. in. Deter-
mine the factor of safety for infinite life based on the modified Goodman relation coupled with
the maximum-shear-stress theory.
