You want to determine if chocolate enhances mood. Subjects will be recruited and randomly assigned to one of three groups: Those in Group 1 will eat their regular diet. Those in Group 2 will eat their regular meals and have a piece of chocolate at breakfast, lunch and dinner over the course of a week. Those in Group 3 will eat their meals as usual and have two pieces of chocolate at breakfast, lunch and dinner. At the end of the week, all participants will complete the Acme Mood Scale What is the dependent variable?

An experimenter hypothesizes that those who eat chocolate are happier than those who don't. To measure the effect of chocolate on happiness, the experimenter randomly assigns participants to two rooms. Participants in room 1 receive several helpings of chocolate, while participants in room 2 receive no chocolate. After 10 minutes, participants in room 1 and 2 are evaluated on whether they show signs of happiness. In this study, the subjects do not know whether they are in an experimental or a control group, only the researcher knows. Complete question #1 by reading the case study below and identifying the independent variable, dependent variable, experimental group, and control group (items a-h).
