Van der Pol's Equation
Van der Pol's equation is a second-order nonlinear differential equation. This represents a particular form of an electronic feedback oscillator in which the nonlinear term involving dy/dt can give rise to self-excited oscillations. Since the problem is nonlinear, no simple analytical approaches are available, and simulation is essential if one wishes to investigate this mathematical model.
2.1 Before using the computer, complete the following tasks:
a. By selecting appropriate state variables, derive the state space model for Van der Pol's oscillator.
b. Explain why this model cannot be expressed in linear Standard State Space Form.
