(a) The pipe outer diameter is 85 mm and thickness is 15 mm. A circumferential crack of length 2 mm has been observed on the surface of the pipe. The pipe has developed stresses at the vicinity of the crack tip due to a mixed load applied on the pipe, which includes a torque of 350 N-m and an axial load of 150 N. Determine the stress intensity factor and critical crack length. To assess the safety of the pipe, the manufacturing process induces a residual compressive stress on the inside of the pipe, which is of the order of 5.75 MPa. The pipe is tested by subjecting it to a hoop stress of 32.5 MPa. Other material properties include a yield strength of 250 MPa and a fracture toughness of 40 MPa-m^1/2.
(b) A large plate with a thickness of 5 mm and a center crack of length 30 mm is subjected to a tensile stress of 140 MPa. A strain gauge is fixed at the crack opening displacement to measure the steel data. The data is as follows: Normal strain to crack = 0.004, y = 0.002, oy = 350 MPa, cit = 0.125 mm.
