A large empty salt mine is being considered to store compressed air for use in a compressed energy storage system. The volume of the salt mine is a series of tunnels that are 14 feet tall by 45 feet wide and run for approximately 2.5 miles. It is estimated, however, that only 0.65 miles of tunnels is legitimately available for compressed air storage. Determine the air mass flow rate in kg/minute through the compressor system to fill the usable volume within the salt mine to 10 atmospheres within 12 hours. Assuming no temperature changes of the gas in the mine after compression, estimate the power and also the total energy needed to compress the outside air from atmospheric pressure and 20°C to 10 atmospheres over the 12-hour period.
