a) Three parts are assembled in series so that their critical dimensions $x_1$, $x_2$ and $x_3$ add.
The dimensions of each part are normally distributed with the following parameters: $\mu_1$
= 55, $\sigma_1$ = 2, $\mu_2$ = 65, $\sigma_2$ = 3 and $\mu_3$ = 92, $\sigma_3$ = 3. If the assembly specification is 215
± 15, determine $C_p$ and $C_{pk}$. Assess whether the process is capable. What percentage
of product will fall outside specification?
b) Two parts are assembled as shown. The distributions of $x_1$ and $x_2$ are normally
distributed with $\mu_1$ = 55mm and $\mu_2$ = 54mm, and $\sigma_1$ = 0.3mm and $\sigma_2$ = 0.2mm. The
specification of the clearance between the moving parts is 0.9mm ± 0.5mm. What
fraction of the assemblies will fail to meet the specifications if assembly is at random?
$x_1$
$x_2$
