5. A source of light is located in a block with an index of refraction n. The block has perpendicular sides. The source of light is a distance a above the lower surface and light striking the lower surface is totally internally reflected at distances equal to or greater than b from the side of the block. Determine the index of refraction in terms of a and b. You may use trigonometric functions to solve the problem, but your answer should not include a trigonometric function.

For total internal reflection to occur: The light must pass from one material to another with a lower refractive index. The angle of incidence must be greater than the critical angle. Both conditions A and B must be met. None of these.

think & Calculate A beam of light in substance 1 (index of refraction = 1.33) has an angle of incidence of 51° at the boundary with substance 2 (index of refraction = 1.66). (a) Is the angle of refraction greater than, less than, or equal to 51°? Explain. (b) What is the angle of refraction?
A beam of light both reflects and refracts at the surface between air and glass, as shown in Figure P22.25. If the index of refraction of the glass is $n_{e}$ find the angle of incidence, $\theta_{1}$, in the air that would result in the reflected ray and the refracted ray being perpendicular to each other. Hint: Remember the identity $\sin \left(90^{\circ}-\theta\right)=\cos \theta$.
