Personal space, or the distance we maintain from others, reflects comfort levels and boundaries. For example, during a group discussion, standing too close to someone might feel intrusive, while maintaining an appropriate distance shows respect. In a classroom, a teacher who moves closer to a student while offering help demonstrates attentiveness, but standing too close could make the student feel uncomfortable. Cultural differences also influence how people perceive personal space (Mehrabian, 1972). Consider this scenario: a speaker giving a presentation maintains steady eye contact with the audience, uses open gestures, and speaks in a confident tone. This combination of non-verbal cues communicates credibility and engagement, leaving a positive impression. On the other hand, if the speaker avoids eye contact, keeps their arms crossed, and speaks in a hesitant tone, the audience might perceive them as unsure or unprepared (Burgoon, Guerrero, & Floyd, 2016). question: Rewrite in synonym word.
