a) A chemical reaction is done by the following reaction equation:
2KClO3(s) → 2KCl(s) + 3O2(g)
i) Find the oxidation numbers of the elements K, Cl, and O in the reactants and products in the reaction.
ii) Find out what is oxidized and what is reduced in the reaction.
b) The electrochemical voltage range gives us the reduction potential (E^Ored) for some chemical half-reactions at 25 degrees C. We have a system where iron (Fe) corrodes in a sour environment. The following oxidation-reduction reaction happens:
Fe(s) + 2H+ (aq) → Fe2+(aq) + H2(g)
i) Write the half-reactions for oxidation and reduction in this system.
ii) Calculate the standard total potential for the oxidation-reduction reaction. Is the reaction spontaneous or not spontaneous? Give a reason for your answer.
