At a point in a stressed body, the cartesian components of stress are Oxx = 60 MPa, Guy = -40 MPa, Ozz = 20 MPa, Txy = -40 MPa, Tyz = 20 MPa, and Txz = 30 MPa. Determine: (a) The principle stresses and their direction cosines. (b) The normal and shear stresses on a plane whose outer normal has the following direction cosines: cos (n,x) = 0.429; cos (n, y) = 0.514; cos (n, z) = 0.743

Calculate the shear stress when a normal stress of 20 lb/in^2 is applied to a material with cohesion of 2 lb/in^2 and an angle of internal friction of 35 degrees. The Mohr-Coulomb Failure Criterion represents the linear envelope that is obtained from a plot of the shear stress of a material versus the applied normal stress. More generally, the Mohr-Coulomb theory is a mathematical model that describes the response of brittle materials, like concrete or rubble piles, to shear stress as well as normal stress. Most of the classical engineering materials somehow follow this rule in at least a portion of their shear failure envelope. The Mohr-Coulomb criterion is represented by τ = σ tan(θ) + c where τ is the shear stress (units of lb/in^2), σ is the normal stress (units of lb/in^2), θ is the angle of internal friction (units of degrees), and c is the cohesion (units of lb/in^2).
