A block of medium strength overburden has to be clear over an area of 400m long and 100m deep at a rural iron ore mine. The blast holes are drilled using a DTH drill rig averaging 38m/hr on 2 x 10 hour worked shifts producing 250mm diameter holes on an average bench height of 15m. As much of the area as possible has to be blasted. Assume: Burden = 30 x hole diameter Spacing = 1.2 x burden Stemming Depth = 20 x hole diameter Sub-drill = 4 x hole diameter Explosives: Heavy ANFO; Explosive Density: 1 g/cc Calculate the following: a) Burden and spacing (2 marks) b) Volume of overburden to be blasted (2 marks) c) Total weight of explosives to be ordered (2 marks) d) Powder factor (2 marks) e) Days to complete drilling assuming no interruptions (2 marks)

Step 1
- Given: Hole diameter = 250 mm - Burden = 30 x hole diameter \[ \text{Burden} = 30 \times 250 \, \text{mm} = 7500 \, \text{mm} = 7.5 \, \text{m} \] Show more…

Civil Engineer needs 4800, 5810, and 5690 m3 of sand, fine gravel, and coarse gravel, respectively for the construction site. There are three sources where these materials can be obtained and the composition of the material from these sources is as follows: Sand Fine Gravel Coarse Gravel Source 1: 45% 35% 20% Source 2: 22% 52% 25% Source 3: 15% 25% 52% How many cubic meters must be pulled from each source to meet the engineer's needs? Use the Gauss Jordan method. Note: Let xi be the volume taken from pit i. Therefore, the following system of equations must hold for the cubic meters of each pit to be pulled as x1, x2, x3 respectively.
