A client of yours is interested in upgrading an existing power transmission system in one of his production lines. A sketch of the existing power transmission system is given in Appendix A. This system comprises a shaft, two flat pulleys attached to the shaft, and one support at each end of the shaft, respectively. The technical specifications for the examined system are given in Section 2 of this assignment brief. Your task is to redesign the given system so that:
a) the power handled by the new system will be 15 times the power handled by the existing system;
b) each one of the flat pulleys will be replaced by a grooved pulley, and each flat belt will be replaced by a V-belt;
c) the shaft will be of minimum weight.
Your deliverable will be a technical report, describing your proposed design solution, presenting all the necessary calculations, and justifying all of your selections and design decisions. A set of complete technical drawings of the proposed design solution, along with any other parts associated with the shaft (e.g. keys, supports, bushes, bearings, etc.), should also be included in your report as an Appendix.
