The question is whether the percentage of students who have been to the dentist in the last 6 months at the University of Maryland is significantly different from the US average of 55%. The null hypothesis (Ho) is that the proportion of students in this population going to the dentist in the last 6 months is equal to 55% of the students. The alternative hypothesis (Ha) is that the proportion is not equal to 55%. Assuming the data are: discussion percent = 0.6 for a sample of size 27. We do not need a sample standard deviation because this is a question about a percentage, not a mean. To analyze the data statistically, we set up the equation and calculate a z-value (z*). Assuming the 1-tail critical value is 1.65 and the 2-tail critical value is 1.96. Based on the calculated z-value, we determine whether to reject or not reject the null hypothesis. Finally, we provide a statement of conclusion that includes the statistical evidence (z-value), sample size (n), p-value (either >0.05 or <0.05), and make an inference back to the population.
