A group of investors wish to put up a steel processing plant near a hilly area in Kafue, 18.1\deg S of the equator at an altitude of 2500 m above sea level and 84 km from Lusaka. The construction project is expected to last 5 years. An enquiry with ZESCO indicated that there was no plan to install a power line to the area in the near future. The plant is to employ heavy equipment such as furmaces, crushers, rolling mills etc as well as its own electricity requirements. An exaggerated estimation of the power requirement is about 4.6 MW . The group is also shown a nearby area through which water from the main river flows all year round and informed that a good amount of rainfall of about 165 cm is received during the rainy season, an ample daily sunshine of 5.6 psh and an average wind speed of 4.3(m)/(s) for three months per year. The catchment area is estimated to be about 185km^(2) with an average runoff of 80%. There are a number of steep hills near the river that can easily give a fall of about 90 m . In order to formulate an initial proposal for the project, you have been approached to provide the following details:
(a) The suitability of the site for developing a small hydro power scheme by determining the power potential of the site taking an average plant efficiency of 88% and a 10% loss in the penstock.
(b) The number and type of turbines required for the power station given that the design for the generator is preferred to be directly coupled to a turbine having a specific speed of 388 , frequency of generation of 60cycle(s)/(s) and the number of poles used is 20 .
(c) The maximum pressure rise in the penstock if the valve is suddenly closed and the pipe is considered to be elastic, taking the discharge through the penstock to be 50% of that in the river and a penstock diameter of 50 cm .
(d) The generator rating if an electronic load controller is to be used with the plant using tube lights and the maximum temperature in the power house is not to exceed 40\deg C.
