First, let's understand what edge and screw dislocations are and how they appear in a crystal lattice. **Edge Dislocation:** An edge dislocation is a linear defect that arises from the termination of a plane of atoms in the middle of a crystal. Imagine an extra Show more…

Given a unit cell and assuming FCC structure with a Burgers vector (|b|) along the [110] direction, sketch each dislocation line for the given directions and determine the type of defect (edge, screw or mixed).

Consider two parallel dislocations A and B lying on the same plane. Their Burgers vectors, bA and bB, lie parallel to the slip plane but are not parallel to each other. Their magnitudes are equal. See figure below: The angle between the Burgers vector and the dislocation line for each dislocation is indicated in the figure. a) Calculate the force per unit length that dislocation A exerts on dislocation B. b) Find all possible orientations of the Burgers vectors for which the component of the force between the dislocations that acts parallel to the slip plane is zero. Hint: Take into account the factor (1-v) that appears in expressions pertaining to edge dislocations but is absent in the case of screw dislocations.

Suppose the active slip system in an FCC crystal is [-110](11-1). a. Give the Burgers vectors for the unit dislocation causing slip and explain how you know this. b. If slip occurs by the motion of pure unit edge dislocations, give the direction of the dislocation line. c. If slip occurs by the motion of pure unit screw dislocations, give the direction of the dislocation line. d. Give the direction in which the dislocation line would move during slip in (b) and (c) above. e. Suppose a shear stress of 100 psi acts on the (11-1) plane in the [-110] direction. Calculate the direction and magnitude of the force per unit length which the shear stress exerts on (1) a pure unit edge dislocation and (2) a pure unit screw dislocation. The lattice parameter is a = 2 Å.
