If a cell accumulates mutations and becomes less specialized, it no longer functions as part of the surrounding tissue. Failure to undergo apoptosis and the cell's ability to continue to divide without regulation will create a mass of cells called a tumor. Tumors may be divided into one of two categories: benign tumors, which are localized to one tissue type and are an abnormal growth composed of multiple layers of cells, and malignant tumors, which pose the greatest threat to our bodies as they can spread to other locations in the body. Malignant tumors are composed of cells that possess the ability to metastasize.
