A nurse researcher designed a study to explore emergency room users perceptions of quality of nursing care. The researcher went to the local community hospitals and asked the patients in the triage room if they wanted to participate in the study. This was done for 5 nights in a row and 40 people were recruited. This method of sampling is considered: (Select All That Apply) Random Sampling Probability Sampling Non-probability Sampling Convenience Sampling

This is because the researcher selected participants based on their availability and accessibility, rather than using a random or systematic method to select participants. Show more…

20. Sampling Methods: Health Care Modern Managed Hospitals (MMH) is a national for-profit chain of hospitals. Management wants to survey patients discharged this past year to obtain patient satisfaction profiles. It wishes to use a sample of such patients. Several sampling techniques are described below. Categorize each technique as simple random sample, stratified sample, systematic sample, cluster sample, or convenience sample. (a) Obtain a list of patients discharged from all MMH facilities. Divide the patients according to length of hospital stay (2 days or less, 3-7 days, 8-14 days, more than 14 days). Draw simple random samples from each group. (b) Obtain lists of patients discharged from all MMH facilities. Number these patients, and then use a random-number table to obtain the sample. (c) Randomly select some MMH facilities from each of five geographic regions, and then include all the patients on the discharge lists of the selected hospitals. (d) At the beginning of the year, instruct each MMH facility to survey every 500th patient discharged. (e) Instruct each MMH facility to survey 10 discharged patients this week and send in the results.

A professional society, with a membership of 45,000, is designing a study to evaluate its members’ satisfaction with the type of sessions presented at the society’s annual meeting. In each of the following descriptions of the method of selecting participants in the survey, iden- tify the type of sampling method used (simple random sampling, stratified sampling, or cluster sampling). a. The society has an alphabetical listing of all its members. It assigns a number to each name and then using a computer software program generates 1,250 numbers between 1 and 45,000. It selects these 1,250 members for the survey. b. The society is interested in regional differences in its members’ opinions. Therefore, it divides the United States into nine regions with approximately 5,000 members per region. It then randomly selects 450 members from each region for inclusion in the survey. c. The society is composed of doctors, nurses, and therapists, all working in hos- pitals. There are a total of 450 distinct hospitals. The society decides to conduct onsite in-person interviews, so it randomly selects 20 hospitals and interviews all members working at the selected hospital.

A researcher wants to survey nurses who work at Sacred Heart hospital. Of the 90 nurses who work at this hospital, 40 work in the maternity ward, 20 work in the oncology ward and 30 work in the surgical ward. You decide to study 10% of the nurse population so you choose nine nurses as follows: 4 nurses are chosen at random from the 40 maternity nurses, two are chosen at random from the 20 oncology nurses, and 3 are chosen at random from the 30 surgical nurses. What type of sampling is this?
