Adi S.
35-year-old male patient is in the hospital with breathlessness, fever, and gross swelling of his left leg. His daughter had contracted chickenpox two weeks earlier and he caught the disease from her one week ago. On visiting his primary care physician, the man was prescribed acyclovir and hydrocortisone. Later, the male patient rushed back to the hospital where he was found to have severe purulence and dead muscle tissue in the calf of his leg, which tracked up the thigh. Cultures isolated from the leg were beta-hemolytic on blood agar. What is the infecting microorganism? Epidemiology: How does this organism enter the body and how does it spread within the body and from person to person? How is this disease contracted? Pathogenesis: What are the virulence factors? How does this organism cause pathology? Clinical Manifestations: What are the signs and symptoms of the disease? How does the disease present itself to the healthcare professional? Laboratory Findings: How would you diagnose this organism? What should you find? Treatment and Prevention: How would you treat this disease and how would you prevent contraction of this organism? What type of test would you use to distinguish the two bacteria that are gram-positive cocci in chains that show beta-hemolysis?
