Case Study 8-3: Drawing Blood from a Transplant Patient George, a phlebotomist has a bilirubin and ammonia to collect on a patient on the transplant floor in the surgical intensive care unit. It is his last of the morning draws and he is anxious to get back to the lab. He has plans to meet a friend on his coffee break. A nurse is just leaving the patient's room. She says she will be back in a minute to assist. George waits a few minutes, but the nurse does not return. He can't imagine why she would need to assist him with anything, so he decides to go ahead with the draw. The patient is semiawake and mumbles his name when George verifies his identification. George finds a vein and starts to insert the needle. Suddenly the patient jerks his arm away. George almost sticks himself with the needle and quickly activates the needle safety device. Blood is running down the patient's arm and George tries to hold gauze over it but the patient thrashes about. The nurse comes rushing into the room. She is mad at George for not waiting for her. She calms the patient down, holds his arm steady and George is able to collect the specimens. George then grabs his tray and the tubes and heads back to the lab, labeling and initialing the tubes on his way. QUESTIONS 1. What do you think made the patient so combative? 2. What should George have done differently? 3. George did not handle the specimens correctly. What did he fail to do?
