a) Points that lie on the same line are called collinear points. Draw three collinear points labeled A, B, and C. Then draw the line passing through all three points. b) Draw three points E, F, and G that are not collinear. Then draw a triangle so E, F, and G are its vertices. c) Two lines in the same plane that do not intersect are called parallel lines. Draw two parallel lines, m and n. To show that m and n parallel, we write m||n. NOTE: Some books state a line is parallel to itself. d) Three or more lines that contain the same point are called concurrent lines. Draw three lines, r, s, and t, that are concurrent. Label their point of intersection as point P. e) Draw three lines, a, b, and c, so they are not concurrent and no two are parallel to each other.

Line segments are parallel iff they lie in parallel lines. Consider the points $\mathrm{A}(3,1)$ $\mathrm{B}(6,7), \mathrm{C}(0,-5),$ and $\mathrm{D}(2,-1)$. Plot the four points and draw $\overline{A B}$ and $\overline{\mathrm{CD}}$.

Parallel and Perpendicular Lines
In Chapter 3 parallel lines are defined as coplanar lines that $\mathrm{do}$ not intersect. It is also possible to define parallel lines algebraically as follows: Lines $a$ and $b$ are parallel if and only if slope of $a=$ slope of $b$ (or both a and $b$ are vertical). Use the algebraic definition to classify each statement as true or false. a. For any line $l$ in a plane, $l \|$ l. b. For any lines $l$ and $n$ in a plane, if $l \| n,$ then $n \| l$ . c. For any lines $k, l,$ and $n$ in a plane, if $k \| l$ and $l \| n,$ then $k \| n$ .
