A rectangular plate, shown in vertical section AB, is 4 m high and 6 m wide (normal to the plane of the paper) and blocks the end of a fresh-water channel 3 m deep. The plate is hinged about a horizontal axis along its upper edge through A and is restrained from opening by the fixed ridge B which bears horizontally against the lower edge of the plate. Find the force B exerted on the plate by the ridge.

First, we need to calculate the pressure at any point in the fluid. The pressure at any point in a fluid is given by the equation P = Ļgh, where Ļ is the density of the fluid, g is the acceleration due to gravity, and h is the height of the fluid above the point. Show moreā¦

A 5 m high, 5 m wide rectangular plate blocks the end of a 4 m deep fresh water channel as shown in Figure Q3. The plate is hinged about point A and is restrained from opening by the ridge at point B. Figure Q3 (a) Determine the equivalent single force acting on the gate due to the water. Rotated triangular plate The plate in Exercise 5 is revolved $180^{\circ}$ about line $A B$ so that part of the plate sticks out of the lake, as shown here. What force does the water exert on one face of the plate now? Graph cannot copy
