A rotor of mass 10 kg is mounted midway on a 2 cm diameter horizontal shaft supported at the ends by two bearings. The bearing span is 80 cm. Because of certain manufacturing defect, the centre of gravity of the disc is 0.1 mm away from the geometric centre of the rotor. If the system rotates at 3000 r.p.m. Determine, the amplitude of the steady state vibration and the dynamic load transmitted by the bearing. Take E = 200 GN/m².

Step 1
- Mass of the rotor (m) = 10 kg - Diameter of the shaft (d) = 2 cm = 0.02 m - Length of the bearing span (L) = 80 cm = 0.8 m - Eccentricity (e) = 0.1 mm = 0.0001 m - Rotational speed (N) = 3000 rpm - Modulus of Elasticity (E) = 200 GN/m = 200 x 10^9 N/m^2 Show more…

Three rotors A, B, and C, having moments of inertia of 2000, 6000, and 3500 kg-m respectively, are carried on a uniform shaft with a diameter of 0.35 m. The length of the shaft between rotors A and B is 6 m, and between B and C is 32 m. Find the natural frequency of the torsional vibrations. The modulus of rigidity for the shaft material is 80 GN/m^2. [Ans. 6.16 Hz; 18.27 Hz]

Rotor 4.00 cm The rotor (flywheel) of a toy gyroscope has mass 0.130 kg. Its moment of inertia about its axis is 1.20×10⁻⁴ kg⋅m². The mass of the frame is 0.0250 kg. The gyroscope is supported on a single pivot with its center of mass a horizontal distance 4.00 cm from the pivot. The gyroscope is precessing in a horizontal plane at the rate of one revolution in 2.20 s. The angular speed at which the rotor is spinning about its axis, expressed in revolutions per minute, is A) 1800. B) 1760. C) 1720. D) 1690. E) 1610.
