A woman's prepregnancy body mass index (BMI) is used to determine how much weight she should gain by the end of her pregnancy. Using each woman's BMI when she became pregnant, determine the appropriate amount of weight that she should gain by the end of her pregnancy. Assume she is carrying a single fetus. Underweight at conception Gain 28-40 pounds Gain 25-35 pounds Gain 15-25 pounds Gain 11-20 pounds Healthy weight at conception Obese at conception Overweight at conception

The mean weight gain during pregnancy is 30 pounds with a standard deviation of 12.9 pounds. Weight gain during pregnancy is right skewed. An obstetrician obtains a random sample of 35 of her patients and determined their mean weight gain was 36.2 pounds. Should the obstetrician be concerned?

The mean weight gain for women during a full-term pregnancy is $30.2$ pounds. The standard deviation of weight gain for this group is $9.9$ pounds, and the shape of the distribution of weight gains is symmetric and unimodal. (Source: BMJ 2016; 352 doi: https://doi.org/10.1136/bmj.i555) a. State the weight gain for women one standard deviation below the mean and for one standard deviation above the mean. b. Is a weight gain of 35 pounds more or less than one standard deviation from the mean?
BMI takes both weight and height into account when assessing whether an individual is underweight. BMI varies directly as ones weight, in pounds and inversely as the square of ones height in inches. In adults normal values for the BMI are between 20 and 25, inclusive. Values below 20 indicate that an individual is underweight and values above 25 indicate that an individual is overweight. A person who weighs 180 pounds and is 5 feet, or 60 inches, tall has a BMI of 35.15. use the 4 step procedure for solving variations to determine what the BMI is, to the nearest tenth, for a 210 pound person who is 5 feet 4 inches tall. Is this person underweight, normal, or overweight?.
