In 2009 news organizations reported that 47% of U.S. adults favored providing a legal way for illegal immigrants already in the U.S. to become citizens. In 2010, the percentage with this opinion rose to 50%. Suppose that a current poll of 100 randomly selected U.S. adults shows this percentage is higher than 50% this year. A researcher conducts a hypothesis test with the data from the current poll. She finds that the increase this year is not statistically significant. What conclusion can we draw? Group of answer choices It must be true that 50% of the public still has this opinion this year. The researcher must have misinterpreted the results. There should be a significant increase. The sample size may be too small to detect a statistically significant increase.

A New York Times/CBS News poll asked a sample of U.S. adults whether illegal immigrants who have been in the United States for at least 2 years should be allowed to apply for legal status. Of the 1125 people sampled, 62% replied yes. a. At the 1% significance level, do the data provide sufficient evidence to conclude that less than two-thirds of all U.S. adults feel that illegal immigrants who have been in the United States for at least 2 years should be allowed to apply for legal status? b. Construct a 99% confidence interval for the true proportion of all U.S. adults feel that illegal immigrants who have been in the United States for at least 2 years should be allowed to apply for legal status.

In 2009 news organizations reported that 47% of U.S. adults favored providing a legal way for illegal immigrants already in the U.S. to become citizens. In 2010, the percentage with this opinion rose to 50%. Suppose that a current poll of 1000 randomly selected U.S. adults shows that 530 favor providing a legal way for illegal immigrants already in the U.S. to become citizens. Perform a hypotheses test at a 1% level of significance to investigate if the sample provides enough evidence to conclude that the the proportion of U.S. adults who favor a legal way for illegal immigrants to become citizens has increased from 50%. a) State the null and alternative hypotheses. b) Find the P-value. c) State your conclusion.

00:01 In a previous poll, it was found that 50 % of us adults favored providing a legal way for illegal immigrants already in the us to become citizens.
00:12 And then there was a current poll done for 100 us adults and it shows that this percentage is higher than 50%.
00:21 But a researcher conducts a hypothesis test with this data from the current poll and she finds that the increase this year is not statistically significant.
00:32 So what conclusion can we draw? so in this hypothesis test, the null hypothesis is conventionally that there is no change or no difference.
00:46 So that is, the proportion of us adults who feel this way remains at 50 % or .50.
00:55 And the alternative hypothesis here would be that the proportion has increased.
01:01 The test turned out to be not statistically significant and therefore we don't have evidence to reject the null hypothesis.
01:11 We assume the null hypothesis and unless we have enough contradictory evidence to the null hypothesis, we have to maintain the null hypothesis.
01:20 However, this does not guarantee that the null hypothesis is true.
01:26 So we have three options that we can conclude here.
01:29 First says it must be true that 50 % of the public still has this opinion this year.
01:35 So we have maintained the null hypothesis.
01:39 But that does not guarantee that it's still 50%.
01:42 We just don't have sufficient evidence to reject the null hypothesis...
