In a recrystallisation, why are the newly formed crystals washed with cold solvent? -To wash off any impurities that have crystallized on the surface of the pure crystals. -To wash off the film of solvent which contains the impurities. -To cool down the crystals. -To slightly dissolve the crystals to give them a more rounded shape.

Recrystallization (or Crystallization) is a technique used to purify solids. This procedure relies on the fact that solubility increases as temperature increases (you can dissolve more sugar in hot water than in cold water). As a hot, saturated solution cools, it becomes supersaturated and the solute precipitates (crystallizes) out. In a recrystallization procedure, an impure (crude) solid is dissolved in a hot solvent. As this solution is cooled, the pure product crystallizes out and the impurities stay dissolved. 4. In this experiment, the filtrate collected in the filter flask is neutralized before it is disposed down the drain. What is added to the filtrate to neutralize it and how is it added ? 5. Why is the melting point of the purified crystals determined ?
