All magnetic fields originate in iron atoms. Stationary electric charges do not produce magnetic fields. Permanent magnets are produced by moving electric charges. A moving electric charge produces both an electric and magnetic field. A magnet exerts force on a magnetized iron bar, a moving electric charge, and a stationary electric charge. A drawing of the field lines of a magnetic field provides information about the direction and strength of the field, as well as the source of the field. The magnetic field shown below is produced by a north pole and a south pole.
