An adiabatic cylinder has 8 grams of helium. A light smooth adiabatic piston is connected to a light spring of force constant 300 N/m. The other end of the spring is connected with a block of mass 10 kg kept on a rough horizontal surface of coefficient of friction μ = 0.3. The area of the cross-section of the cylinder is A = 25 cm^2. Initially, the spring is in a relaxed position and the temperature of the gas is 400 K. The gas is heated slowly for some time by means of an electric heater so as to bring the block M on the verge of motion. (Take Patm = 10^5 N/m^2 and g = 10 m/s^2). Find the work done by the gas.

Step 1
The force of friction \( F_f \) is given by: \[ F_f = \mu \cdot m \cdot g \] where \( \mu = 0.3 \), \( m = 10 \, \text{kg} \), and \( g = 10 \, \text{m/s}^2 \). \[ F_f = 0.3 \times 10 \times 10 = 30 \, \text{N} \] Show more…

Two moles of an ideal monoatomic gas is confined in a cylinder by a spring loaded piston of cross-section area $4 \times 10^{-3} \mathrm{~m}$ - Initially the spring of spring constant $k=1920 \mathrm{~N} / \mathrm{m}$ is in its relaxed state. Now, the gas was heated by an electric heater, placed inside the cylinder, for some time and due to which gas expands and does $50 \mathrm{~J}$ of work in moving piston through a distance of $0.1 \mathrm{~m}$. The temperature of the gas increases by $50 \mathrm{~K}$. Assume piston and spring to be massless and there is no friction between the piston and the cylinder. Heat supplied by the heater: (a) $1295 \mathrm{~J}$ (b) $1200 \mathrm{~J}$ (c) $1195 \mathrm{~J}$ (d) $1350 \mathrm{~J}$
An adiabatic cylinder closed at both ends consists of a freely moving non-coducting thin piston which divides the cylinder into two equal parts and each part contains $28 \mathrm{~g}$ of $\mathrm{N}_{2}$. Initially $1 / 3 \mathrm{rd}$ molecules of nitrogen in the right part are dissociated into atoms. The length of the cylinder is $1 \mathrm{~m}$ and area of cross-section is $10^{-2} \mathrm{~m}^{2}$. The natural length of the spring connected to the piston and right wall of the cylinder is $l-50 \mathrm{~cm}$ and $k=\sqrt{2} \times 10^{3} \mathrm{~N} / \mathrm{m}$. If the initial pressure in each part is $P_{0}=\sqrt{2} \times 10^{5} \mathrm{~N} / \mathrm{m}^{2}$ that what work must be done by the gas in the right part? (a) $-1414 \mathrm{~J}$ (b) $1414 \mathrm{~J}$ (c) $-1515 \mathrm{~J}$ (d) $1515 \mathrm{~J}$
A spring-loaded piston-cylinder device contains 100 g of helium as the system, as shown in the figure. The system undergoes a process from 190 kPa and 165 °C to 700 kPa and 450 °C. Determine the (a) work done, (b) heat transfer in this process. The properties of helium are R = 2.08 kJ/kg·K and c_v = 3.16 kJ/kg·K. Also, determine the (c) initial volume and (d) final volume of helium. Spring Helium The work done in this process is kJ. The heat transfer in this process is kJ. The initial temperature of helium is m³/kg. The final temperature of helium is m³/kg.
