1. Consider a lake with a volume of 107 m3 fed by a polluted river having a flow rate of 5 m3/s and pollutant concentration equal to 10 mg/L. There is also a sewage outfall that discharges 0.5 m3/s of wastewater into the lake having a pollutant concentration of 100 mg/L. The stream and sewage wastes have a constant decay rate coefficient of k=0.20/d (rate = k*lake volume*concentration). This means that 20% of the pollutant in the lake are destroyed every day. Assuming the pollutant is completely mixed in the lake and assuming no evaporation or other water losses or gains, find the steady-state pollutant concentration in the lake. 2. In the system described above, the sewage outfall is shut down. What is the concentration in the lake after 4 days (assume completely stirred lake).

9. A dangerous toxic pollutant has been accidentally spilled in a lake. The speed of water contamination is modelled by P(t) = e^(t/4) where P is the concentration in mg per m³ and t is time in minutes. 40 minutes later, the Environment Protection Agency has released in the lake another chemical that neutralizes the toxic pollutant. The concentration of the second chemical is modelled by N(t) = 3^(t/2). The toxic pollutant will be completely neutralized when the two concentrations are equal. a) When is the maximum concentration of pollution reached? b) When is the toxic pollutant completely neutralized?

0:00 We have the given qs.
00:01 So our qs will be equal to 5.
00:06 So we have 5m raised to the power of 3 per s.
00:11 We have our cs that is equals to 10 milligrams per litters.
00:17 And we have our qw, which is equal to 0 .5m raised to the power of 3 per s.
00:24 And we have cw that is equal to 100 milligrams per d .e.
00:31 So our qm is equals to the question mark, cm...
