If an object floats in a fluid, use equations to calculate the volume of the object and prove that the fraction of the object submerged is equal to the density ratio. Use this to estimate whether your calculated density of wood is reasonable. Hint: when floating, the weight of the object is equal to the buoyant force (FB).
For a material to float on the surface of water, the material must have a density less than that of water (1.00 g/mL), and must not react with water or dissolve in it. A cylindrical object has a diameter of 0.40 cm, and 3.55 cm in height, and a mass of 0.482 g. Will this object float or sink when placed in water? (Volume = Pi r2h)
