In the United States, both basic and applied research are conducted. Often, basic research is more highly regarded as a pursuit of knowledge, while applied research may be looked at with suspicion. Like any type of research, one has to evaluate who is conducting the research and by whom it is being funded. For example, a pharmaceutical company might do research on the impact that its product has on various populations before releasing that product. However, underlying knowledge used in that research—such as an understanding of how to test for the product's benefits or damage to a population—is first determined in research conducted by another organization that does not stand to profit from the sale of the product.
