Suppose in the base year, a typical market basket purchased by an urban family cost $250. In year 1, the market basket cost $950. ( for full credit, show all your work including the formulas) 1) What is the CPI for year 1? 2) If the same market basket cost $1000 in year 2, what is the CPI for year 2? 3) What was the year 2 rate of inflation (compared to year 1) ?

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) tracks the prices of consumer goods as shown in the following table. The CPI is reported monthly, but we can look at selected values. The table shows the January CPI at fiveyear intervals. It indicates, for example, that the average item costing $\$ 17.1$ in 1926 cost $\$ 218.6$ in the year 2011 . a) Make a scatterplot showing the trend in consumer prices. Describe what you see. b) Be an economic forecaster: Project increases in the cost of living over the next decade. Justify decisions you make in creating your model.
