Fark and Johnson (1997) report on a survey of professors of education taken in the summer of 1997 and conclude that there is a large disparity between the views of education professors and those of the general public. A sample of 5324 education professors was drawn from a population of about 34,000 education professors in colleges and universities across the country. A letter was mailed to each professor in the sample in May 1997, inviting him or her to participate and to provide a number where he or she could be reached during the summer for a telephone interview. During the summer, a total of 778 interviews were completed by telephone. An additional 122 interviews were obtained by calling professors in the sample at work in August and September. To attempt to minimize question order effects, the survey was pretested and some questions were asked in random order. Respondents were asked which qualities in a series were "absolutely essential" to be imparted to prospective teachers: 84% of the respondents selected having teachers who are "lifelong learners and constantly updating their skills"; 41% selected having teachers "trained in pragmatic issues of running a classroom such as managing time and preparing lesson plans"; 19% selected for teachers to "stress correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation"; and 12% selected for teachers to "expect students to be neat, on time, and polite".

Do educational toys make a difference in the age at which a child learns to read? To study this question, researchers designed an experiment in which one group of preschool children spent 2 hours each day (for 6 months) in a room well supplied with "educational" toys such as alphabet blocks, puzzles, ABC readers, coloring books featuring letters, and so forth. A control group of children spent 2 hours a day for 6 months in a "noneducational" toy room. It was anticipated that IQ differences and home environment might be uncontrollable factors unless identical twins could be used. Therefore, six pairs of identical twins of preschool age were randomly selected. From each pair, one member was randomly selected to participate in the experimental group and the other in the control. For each twin, the data item recorded is the age in months at which the child began reading at the primary level. Control: 60 64 52 65 75 63 Experimental: 58 61 53 60 71 62 Test the claim that the experimental group learned to read at a different age. Notice that we get P = 0.0457 for a two-tailed test. Since this value is smaller than the level of significance, we reject the null hypothesis. The same output gives the P value for a one-tailed test as well. What is the null hypothesis?
