B. Read the following sentences. Identify the storm signal being described. 1. Winds of 30-60 kph may be expected in at least 36 hours or intermittent rains may be expected within 36 hours. 2. Winds greater than \( 100 \mathrm{kph} \) up to \( 185 \mathrm{kph} \) may be expected in at least 18 hours. 3. Winds greater than \( 60 \mathrm{kph} \) and up to \( 100 \mathrm{kph} \) may be expected in at least 24 hours. 4. Very strong winds of more than \( 185 \mathrm{kph} \) may be expected in at least 12 hours. 5. Electrical power distribution and communication services may be severely disrupted.

A meteorologist tracks the movement of a thunderstorm with Doppler radar. At $8: 00 \mathrm{PM},$ the storm was 60 mi northeast of her station. At 10: 00 PM, the storm is at 75 mi north. (a) The general direction of the thunderstorm's velocity is (1) south of east, (2) north of west, (3) north of east, (4) south of west. (b) What is the average velocity of the storm?
Meteorology Meteorologists measure the atmospheric pressure in millibars. From these observations they create weather maps on which the curves of equal atmospheric pressure (isobars) are drawn (see figure). On the map, the closer the isobars the higher the wind speed. Match points $A, B,$ and $C$ with (a) highest pressure, (b) lowest pressure, and (c) highest wind velocity.
Functions of Several Variables
Meteorologists often measure the intensity of a tropical storm or hurricane by the maximum sustained wind speed and the minimum pressure. The relationship between these two quantities is approximately linear. Hurricane Katrina had a maximum sustained wind speed of 150 knots and a minimum pressure of 902 mb (millibars). Hurricane Ophelia had maximum sustained winds of 75 knots and a pressure of $976 \mathrm{mb} .$ A. Find the slope of the line between these two points. Round to one decimal place. B. Using the slope found in part (a) and the point $(75,976),$ find a linear model that represents the minimum pressure of a hurricane, $y,$ versus its maximum sustained wind speed, $x$. C. Hurricane Dennis had a maximum wind speed of 130 knots. Using the equation you found in part (b), predict the minimum pressure.
