Choose from each pair the substance that, in the liquid state, would have the greater vapor pressure at a given temperature. Base your choice on predicted strengths of intermolecular forces. (a) $\mathrm{BiBr}_{3}$ or $\mathrm{BiCl}_{3} ;$ (b) CO or $\mathrm{CO}_{2}$; (c) $\mathrm{N}_{2}$ or $\mathrm{NO}$ (d) $\mathrm{CH}_{3} \mathrm{COOH}$ or $\mathrm{HCOOCH}_{3}$

00:01 All right, so we have the skeleton structures here of, or the structural formulas of four different compounds, and we want to know which one of them is going to have the highest vapor pressure.
00:16 So if something has a high vapor pressure, that means that it is really easy to vaporize into the gas phase, so it's going to have the weakest of the intermolecular forces.
00:27 If we draw the lewis structures out and we can just kind of draw a skeleton, and we can get an idea of what intermolycular forces are at play for each molecule.
00:35 All right.
00:36 So this one we have carbon, which is from a methane.
00:39 So we have a ch3 group.
00:41 And then we have a c double bond o -oh.
00:44 So this is a carboxal group.
00:47 And this oh is a really polar, and it creates the ability to hydrogen bond.
00:52 So you're going to have relatively strong intermolecular forces because of that.
00:59 Now for this next one, so we have a ch3...
