In order to generate affective reactions to visual stimuli, the researchers paired presentations of a face with audio of a human scream. Face presentation then led to enhanced startle responses and self-reported negative affect. What was the nature of the control for the pairings; how did they know the pairings were important and that subjects were not just emotionally sensitized by exposure to screaming? They compared subjects in which the face was paired with screams against other subjects in which the face was presented unpaired with screams. In the same subjects, they compared responses to a face that was paired with screams against responses to a face that was presented unpaired with screams. They had no real control for the pairings and simply compared responses in the same subjects to the face stimuli before and then after they were paired with screams.
