BME 3143 ENGINEERING THERMODYNAMICS AND HEAT TRANSFER
Instructions: Choose any Three (3) questions and answer in the booklet provided.
1. What is the Relationship between Enthalpy and Entropy of a Closed System? (CLO 1) (20 marks)
2. Three moles of an ideal monoatomic gas have an initial pressure P = 3 atm and an initial volume V = 3 L. The gas is taken through the following quasi-static cycle: It is expanded isothermally until it has a volume V = 6 L. It is then heated at constant volume until it has a pressure P = 3 atm. It is then cooled at constant pressure until it is back to its initial state. (CLO 1)
a) Show this cycle on a PV diagram. (6 marks)
b) Find the temperatures T1, T2, and T3. (6 marks)
c) Calculate the heat added and the work done by the gas during each part of the cycle. (8 marks)
