A water distillation system includes a boiler and condenser operating together as shown in the figure above. Water evaporated in the boiler is transferred to the condenser where the vapor condenses on a bank of tubes and forms condensate (liquid distilled water) free of contaminants. During steady-state operation, the water evaporates and condenses at the same constant rate.
The boiler includes a large horizontal plate with an area of 5 m² made of brass as the heater surface, which is operated at 90% of the critical heat flux.
On the condenser side, the tube bank consists of a square array of 100 thin-walled copper tubes, each having a diameter of 27 mm. Cooling water sourced from a nearby river enters the tube bank at 15°C with a total mass flow rate of 90 kg/s. During operation, fouling occurs on the cooling water side corresponding to a fouling factor of 0.0002 m-K/W.
The liquid water in the boiler and the vapor transferred to the condenser always remain saturated.
Consider steady-state operation. Clearly state and check your assumptions.
a) What is the rate of distilled water extraction in kg/s?
b) What is the average exit temperature of the cooling water?
c) What is the total length of tubing in the tube bank?
Imagine there is a similar boiler and condenser system where the tubes with cooling water inside are replaced with a single row containing 10 vertical plates with a height of 1 m. Boundary layers of consecutive plates do not interfere with each other, and the plates are connected to a heat sink which keeps their surface temperature constant at 60°C. As the condenser is operated, a fouling (contact) resistance per unit length of R't = 0.00015t where t is in months develops over the surface of vertical plates.
d) What is the length of the vertical plates in the condenser side when there is no fouling (t = 0)?
e) If the temperature and dimensions of the vertical plates in the condenser are kept constant, plot the boiler side heater surface temperature and condensation rate for 12 months of operation considering that the water evaporates and condenses at the same rate as each other. You may use any software of your choice for plotting purposes.
