Ancient India incorporated an elaborate caste system that defined social relations within society. At the bottom of the caste system were the "Untouchables", a group of people who did important, yet despised, jobs and were treated as if they didn't even exist. I have already used terms like ascribed social status and privilege in order to facilitate conversation within my field of work. I was just talking to my co-worker about how the children we work with are all born into their social status and are lucky to achieve social mobility. We have to use frameworks in order to scaffold for each individual in hope they can achieve independence one day. Social status and roles contribute to how an individual is perceived by their community and consequently how they might react because of these perceptions. Institutional discrimination is the process where society limits people for reasons other than skill and merit such as by race, status and gender. As we read in chapter 8 social stratification is “the real life differences in wealth and other valuable resources”. I do think this class has influenced my knowledge regarding the complexities of social activism as we discussed a multifaceted society which continues to grow in every conceivable direction. Unfortunately for my client population but fortunate for my assignment, my client population drastically varies outside of age being a factor. I work with biological families as well as foster and adopted families in hopes to navigate or increase life chances for families and especially Expand on your classmate’s post by explaining another way your classmate might apply a concept or idea in your classmate’s post to their personal, academic, or professional life.
