Question: Think over the range of harassments that Phoebe experienced. How is her subsequent suicide consistent with the way Cooley's concept of the "looking-glass self" suggests that these events would play out? In the early 1900s, Charles Horton Cooley advanced the belief that we learn who we are by interacting with others. Our view of ourselves, then, comes not only from direct assessment of our own personal qualities but also from our impressions of how others perceive us. Cooley used the phrase "looking-glass self" to emphasize that the self is the product of our social interactions. Think about the looking-glass self as you consider the following example. Then answer the following questions. In January 2010, Phoebe Prince, a 15-year-old girl, committed suicide after being severely bullied by classmates for several months. The day before she committed suicide, she had faced harassment and verbal abuse. She and her family had recently moved to Northampton, Massachusetts, from Ireland. Some students were upset about a brief dating relationship Phoebe had maintained with a male student in the school. The day before her suicide, Phoebe had even been harassed in the presence of a faculty member, who did not report it until after her death. The harassment was above and beyond normal teenage quarrels. The behavior was intended to humiliate Phoebe and make it difficult for her to stay in school. Most students and some faculty and administrators were aware of the bullying. Although a few individuals did intervene, the school's code of conduct was inconsistently enforced. A number of students are now facing criminal charges. Q. Think back over the range of harassments that Phoebe experienced. How is her subsequent suicide consistent with the way Cooley's concept of the looking-glass self suggests that these events would play out?
