Electric field (E) is defined in terms of force (F) on a test charge of charge q: F = qE. The electric field is proportional to the magnitude of the force on the test charge. The electric field points in the direction of the force on a positive test charge. All charges placed within an electric field are pushed in the direction of the electric field. The electric field is an illustration of the force exerted by a point charge on its surrounding charges.
