Hi there.
00:03
In this question, we are working with solutions.
00:08
Solutions are of course composed of a solute, the substance that is dissolved, and a solvent, the substance that does the dissolving.
00:20
And we have three terms that we can use.
00:22
Well, there are lots of terms we can use, but for this question, we're talking about solutions in terms of being unsaturated, saturated, or super saturated.
00:46
All right.
00:47
So an unsaturated solution in an insaturated solution in an insaturated.
00:50
In any unsaturated solution, that means it does not have as much solute in it as it could hold.
00:56
So in other words, more solute could still be dissolved.
01:05
So if we add more solute, we can still dissolve it.
01:10
It is not at its maximum capacity for solute in the solvent.
01:16
Saturated, however, is at its maximum capacity.
01:21
So the maximum amount of solute is dissolved under those conditions.
01:32
That's not to say if we change conditions, we could dissolve more because we could, especially a lot of times if we warm it up.
01:38
But under those conditions, we have the maximum amount of solute dissolved.
01:46
If we are dissolved to add more, if we're saturated and we add more solute, it would just fall to the bottom.
01:53
It would not dissolve into solution.
01:59
All right.
02:00
And super saturated has actually, like the prefix super implies, it has more solute dissolved at the current temperatures than it should hold.
02:19
You might ask, well, how can we do that? and the answer to that is we usually heat it up.
02:26
So you heat it up and you make a saturated solution at a higher temperature and then you cool it without disturbing it.
02:39
And the crystals don't always recognize their crystal shape and so they don't come out of solution.
02:46
Now, if we bump it or add a seed crystal, then it'll crystallize in front of our eyes.
02:52
But the way that we make this is by cooling a saturated solution and disturbed.
02:58
Okay, so those are our definitions.
03:00
Let's look at each of these and decide what each of these should be classified as.
03:06
So letter a says if we agitate the solution, a large amount of solid crystals come out...
