Colligative Properties Part A - Puzzle I: "The Stuff"
Stinky and Blinky were two general chemistry students that were just trying to get by. The guys were challenged with the task of using boiling point elevation to identify an unknown salt, which they cleverly called "The Stuff."
To make their lives easier, the instructor told that this soluble salt was prepared from a Group IIA metal and a nonmetal with 6 valence electrons.
Since they weren't very good students, Stinky and Blinky decided to add acid to The Stuff to see "what happens" and they just about killed themselves by breathing the reaction product.
The following data were obtained:
1. Boiling point of the pure water = 99.20°C.
2. Mass of water used to prepare salt solution = 200.0g.
3. Mass of salt dissolved to prepare the solution = 50.0-g
4. Boiling point of the solution = 101.33°C.
5. Use a $K_b$ for water of 0.51°C kg/mol for this problem.
Indicate what the data tell you, and do the calculations and report the chemical formula of "The Stuff."
