Jane is a preschool teacher and is working with her learners to develop their language awareness and early literacy skills. She has learned about Howard Gardner and recognizes that she has a class of children that have unique learning strengths and needs. To support all children to be successful with building language awareness and early literacy skills, she jots down some ideas to help incorporate language awareness/literacy into a variety of structured and unstructured activities. Review each of her notes below and select the type of learner that they are likely to appeal to. During book readings, ask these children to identify/describe how characters in the book might be feeling. Answer 1 During lunch, encourage children to share a story from their day, or something that happened at home. Help children understand story sequencing by asking "what happened then/next"? Answer 2 Go on a nature walk and help children take pictures of items that are discovered (e.g. sky, tree, leaf, twig, branch, acorn). Later, print pictures and work with children to help you name and label the pictures to create a nature book. Answer 3 Invite children to use paints to represent a character or scene from a story.
