The classic example of opportunity cost is the costs of going to college. Illustrate the implicit opportunity cost of foregone income as well as tuition, books, etc. Think about whether room and board should be considered a cost of college. You could take a 15-week, three-credit college course, which requires 10 hours per week of your time and costs $500 per credit hour in tuition. Or you could work during these hours at a job paying $10 per hour. What is the net cost of the class compared to working? Based on your answer and the fact that the average college graduate earns near $28,000 per year more than the average high school graduate, what is your opinion as to whether the college course is a worthwhile expense?
