Detective Jones is investigating a fraud scheme where a telephone caller asks for the person's credit card number, so a transaction can be run again. The suspects appear to be calling women in their fifties and sixties who live alone and shop at a particular pharmacy. He requests the chief pharmacist to check his files and call all the women that meet that criteria and ask them to call Detective Jones at the local precinct public number. Several women call him, and he arranges to have a wiretap placed on their phones. He and other detectives listen to the phone calls, and hear the suspect caller. They immediately trace the call and travel to the location, where they find an employee of the pharmacy. He consents for them to enter, where they see on his desk near his phone, the notes of several credit card numbers he has obtained from the victims.
